“Oplan Sagip Kaibigan” – Keeping the ‘Bayanihan’ Spirit Alive

Bayanihan is the Filipino term for communal efforts in accomplishing tasks which are usually difficult when done alone. The Bayanihan Spirit is probably unique in the Filipino but it is also fast becoming an endangered species, let’s start resurrecting it to begin from the barkadahan.

Kama(November 08) Typhoon Yolanda, which weather forecasters said is the strongest storm to hit the country this year and two worst affected provinces are Leyte and Samar. Wherein Ramil Gatdula family currently resides. Thousands of typhoon survivors swarmed to leave the area and go somewhere to start a new life.

As it was bayanihan the barkadahan from Panginay community and their OFW (Overseas Friends Worker) had their share of the bayanihan thru financial support. At the same time OSK rescue team prepared the things needed for journey (food, gasoline, medicine, etc.). Everybody had a role in the bayanihan. Everybody was busy coordinating. What a way to put the bayanihan spirit to life and what a sight to behold.

Today (November 20) ‘Oplan Sagip Kaibigan’ has accomplished its mission to save one of their friend and his family (Ramil Gatdula).

Omeng Family

The spirit of communal effort to achieve a task is commonly practiced in the Philippines, hence, the term “bayanihan” has become the motivating force that entices members of the community to come forth and lend a helping hand in almost every endeavor there is to task.

By this time, OSK team had worked with every member of the group and realized how each one of them is an important component of the bayanihan system.

Kudos team OSK! Godbless you all!!!

Invitation : A Special Mass for the Philippines & A Call for Help

Subject: Invitation : A Special Mass for the Philippines & A Call for Help

Dear Friends,

We all know Filipinos. They are our friends and colleagues. They are our helpers, they are the people who wait on us in restaurants, assist us in stores, sing in our choirs. The Philippines has been beset almost continuously this year by calamity after calamity – storms, floods, an earthquake and now Typhoon Haiyan. But the magnitude of the storm and the abject poverty of the provinces struck has made this far different from previous disasters. Those who did not die in the storm are now suffering hunger and thirst as well as injury and lack of shelter across a network of provinces.

Last November 8, multiple towns and cities in the Visayan region of the Philippines were struck by what has been acknowledged as the worst typhoon ever recorded. Haiyan blew through the Visayas, causing savage destruction, killing and injuring vast numbers. The final counts are not even in yet, but it’s estimated to be in the thousands in each of the provinces blighted. To make matters even worse, these provinces – Leyte and Samar – are among the poorest of the poor, and residents live hand-to-mouth on a daily basis, even in good weather. Right now, the affected areas do  not have running water, electricity or cell phone signal. Right now, those who have survived are thirsty and hungry as well as injured and homeless.

The priority is ensuring the continued survival of the survivors themselves. The most basic needs of water, food and shelter need to be met and met continuously for a good long period so the people can rebuild their lives. Your generous cash donations will help non-government, government and religious organisations deliver steady and abundant relief to all those affected.

Monsignor Philip Heng, SJ and Fr Mark James Aloysius, SJ

invite you to a special mass this

Friday, November 15 at 8pm

at St Ignatius Church, 120 Kings Road, Singapore

for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

A special collection will be taken up for their immediate and sustained relief. We hope you will come and worship with us, pray for the the Philippines, for their leadership, and for every single family affected by the this terrible disaster.

We encourage you to give as generously as you can.

Please pass on to your friends, other groups and organisations.

Jollibee in Singapore is fastfood chain’s top performing outlet worldwide

DSC_0109SINGAPORE—The Jollibee outlet at shopping center Lucky Plaza in Singapore is the fast food chain’s top performing outlet worldwide.

The Philippine-based Jollibee, famous for its fried chicken dish Chickenjoy, has over 800 outlets across the globe and opened its first Singapore outlet on the sixth floor of Lucky Plaza at Orchard Road on March 12.

Jollibee vice president for international operations Dennis M. Flores told The Straits Times that the Lucky Plaza outlet attracted 35,000 customers in its first week but did not elaborate on customer numbers so far. Jollibee is looking to open another outlet by the end of the year at either Tampines or Causeway Point in Woodlands, he added.

Jollibee formally marked its first milestone store in Singapore on Wednesday with a celebration officiated by its global chief executive and chairman Tony Tan Caktiong. Among the invited guests were former president of Singapore, S R Nathan, and Temasek Holdings’ chief executive and executive director Ho Ching.

Jollibee to open second store in Singapore

Guess what? They’re going to hire more Singaporeans in spite of some internet calls for boycott.

In an exclusive interview with Singapore Business Review, a spokesperson of Jollibee Singapore said the success of the first store encourages them to embark for the opening of their second store possibly in the next quarter.

“We didn’t expect a very strong response. Our store opens at 9am and is supposed to close at 9pm but because of long queues of customers even during weekdays, we have to keep it open until 2am,” he said.

Jollibee Singapore officially opened on March 12 despite threats of boycott from Singapore nationals over hiring discrimination claims.
In a separate interview, Jollibee Vice President for Asia and Middle East Dennis Flores defended that Jollibee Singapore has a total of 62 staff, of which 79% are locals – 46 Singapore nationals and 3 permanent residents.

Jollibee Singapore soon to open

Singaporeans will soon get a taste of Chickenjoy, Yum burger and Jolly Spaghetti, as the Philippines’ biggest fast food chain Jollibee is laying the groundwork to finally open a store in the city-state.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange, Jollibee Foods Corp. (JFC) said its wholly owned subsidiary Golden Plate Pte. Ltd. signed an agreement to form a company with Beeworks Inc. to open and operate Jollibee stores in Singapore.

The new company will be 60% owned by Golden Plate and 40% owned by Beeworks. Golden Plate will have full management control of the company, while leveraging on Beeworks’ experience and network to establish Jollibee in Singapore.

JFC said the new Jollibee Singapore company will have an initial funding of $1 million.

Beeworks (Jollibee Singapore) is described as a company owned by mostly Singaporeans with experience in retail and hospitality sector.

There are currently 79 Jollibee stores around the world: 26 in the U.S., 32 in Vietnam, 11 in Brunei, 7 in Jeddah and 1 each in Hong Kong, Qatar and Kuwait.

JFC, the country’s largest food service company, saw its profit grow by 8.1% to P682 million in the first three months of 2012, as its restaurants in the Philippines and other countries continued to show strong growth.

The company operates 2,004 stores in the Philippines, including Jollibee (752 ), Chowking (381), Greenwich (204), Red Ribbon (207), Mang Inasal (436) and Burger King (24).

Overseas, JFC operates Yonghe King and Hong Zhuang Yuan in China, as well as Jollibee, Red Ribbon, Chowking in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Jollibee Singapore facing resistance

(14 Feb) – Jollibee’s foray in the Singaporean market is facing resistance.

The resistance appears to be a particular Singaporean dislike for seeing Filipino crew in the Singapore branch.

Jollibee Singapore

Jollibee Singapore

“Singaporeans are encouraged to boycott Jollibee Singapore to send a message that foreign businesses which hire foreigners first are not welcome in Singapore, and, businesses which targeted the Singaporean market share and profit off Singaporeans should prioritize job opportunities for Singaporeans first,” a website said.

The same group is believed to be the same one behind the Facebook account, Boycott Jollibee Singapore, which posted the same sentiments.

The Facebook account [Link] https://www.facebook.com/BoycottJollibee was created Tuesday, February 12, and so far has generated 2,351 likes.

Jollibee Singapore is not available for comment as of press time.

The company first revealed its plan to venture into Southeast Asia’s financial hub in May, announcing that unit Golden Plate Pte. Ltd. has entered into a 60:40, $1 million-capitalized, joint-venture agreement with Singaporean Beeworks Inc., to bring the Jollibee brand into Singapore shores.

Beeworks is owned by mostly Singaporeans with extensive business experience in the retail and hospitality sector, among them Jennie Chua who was a former CEO of Raffles Holdings.
